A Letter from the Head Football Coach and Principal of Eminence High School

An e-mail sent from a parent to one of our SportsLeader coaches:

Hi Coach,

I just wanted to say thanks for talking to my son about that incident. He’s a good kid but as you know they all need some guidance along the way. I shared the bad with you so I am going to share something you can be proud of him for…we are.

He witnessed an accident directly in front of him this weekend on Sat. He called 911 and sat with a 19 year old girl who pulled out in front of a truck. She never looked left and the truck hit her full speed. They had to cut her out of the car and medi-vac her to a trauma center. He held her hand until the medics got there and just kept talking to her. The girl is in critical condition but still alive. The Police have been calling the house to give us updates.

We always ask the best from our kids and since his involvement with the Football team I have seen him grow from a boy into a young man. The work on the field and off has definitely made him a better person and I just wanted to say thank you to you and all the coaches for making these kids great people and that is what it is really all about.

Best regards,

An e-mail from a parent to a League Director that runs SportsLeader:

Hello Coach,

YOU should be very proud of this accomplishment as well!! This is an excellent program you have built & I think it's great that you are giving the boys so much credit despite all the hard work you have done putting it together. I don't know how Sportsleader came to hear of/be interested in your league, but I am glad that they are & we are happy to be part of this organization this year.

As you may have guessed, I had my reservations about putting our son back into the program at the end of last year, but he said he wanted to do it again, so I decided to put my own feelings aside and let him try one more year, trying to keep an open mind; I am SO glad that I did!!

I was concerned about his self esteem by the end of last year, but so far this year, I can see a WORLD of improvement not just in his confidence, but also in his interest (not once have I heard "do I have to go to practice??") and his effort to be more responsible and organized generally so that he CAN play makes me wonder if I have the wrong kid some days!

You said something to me during our "discussion" on the sidelines last year that concerned me at the time - that you and the coaches were trying to teach these boys "about life". I had a problem with that at the time, because I feel parents have that primary responsibility for this, and because I did not think that the "life lessons" coming from football last year were not those that I really wanted my son to learn.

However, this year, I have a much different perspective because of the approach the coaches seem to be taking and because of the unbelievably organized practices and everything else you have put together.

I am very pleased with the mentoring (as much as I would LOVE to be all things to my kids, every 9/10 year old boy needs positive male role models in his life, and unfortunately, his dad isn't one of them, so the coaches have been great for him. The contracts (even though I had concerns about the on-time rule, given that I work downtown and have to leave work early on practice days because I never know when I might get stuck in traffic and initially questioned what message (sports/extracurricular vs. responsibilities) this sends to him - while I am still not thrilled about him having to run in the event that I am unable to get him to practice on time because of my other obligations, it has given us a chance to discuss choices, consequences, primary responsibilities, etc.

Anyway, I think you are running a GREAT program this year - I am very impressed & happy with what I have seen & am very glad I gave the program another chance. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
