2011 Powers Catholic Girls Cross Country Season Summary

The 2011 Powers Catholic Girls Cross Country team consisted of 43 girls. By class, there were 21 Freshman, 10 Sophomores, 6 Juniors, and 6 Seniors. Voluntary Summer conditioning began on June 13th, and we kicked off the regular season by attending a 5 day camp at Camp Timber Wolfe Lake, in Lake City, MI. We finished the week-‐long Camp by competing in a 5k scrimmage against St. Clare.

This year the team was following the Sports Leader program. We added “Jersey” night, where dads handed out team Jerseys to their daughters prior to the first race. Later in the year, we had “Letters to Mom” where each girl recited their letter honoring their mom in front of the team. We studied the virtues of Charity, Humility and Courage throughout the season, by discussing weekly themes, received text quotes each morning throughout the week that included daily resolutions, and named Freshman/upperclassman “buddies”.

The team won the Earlybird Invitational, went undefeated in the last year of Big Nine competition winning each dual meet and the League Championship. We added a meet at Waterford Mott against mainly Division I teams and took 5th place. We were Overall Greater Flint Area Champions for the second year in a row. Two days later we placed 6th out of 37 teams at the Portage Invitational without our lead runner. The fact that it was Homecoming weekend, with 3 girls on the Court made it an especially busy week for us.

At the Fr. Gabriel Richard Invitational we raced against last years State Champs, Hanover Horton. The race was exciting and very close, ending in a tie, but with the Powers girls winning on the tie-‐breaker rule of 1st sixth man in. The team raced very well at Regionals, but came in second to a very impressive and young Caro team. A week later the girls team raced at MIS in the Division III State Finals and took 7th place overall, beating Caro who dropped to 11th. The 7th place finish with 228pts. equaled last years finish but with 64 fewer points. Benzie won the State finals in 2011.

The team was coached by David Quinn, with assistant coach Shelley Hanchett and Trini Martinez and Dr. Rick Smith also assisting.

Some individual honors were:

County
