Cleveland ROCKS!

Virtues:

More and more leaders are realizing the power of character formation, mentoring and leadership training with their athletes: school administrators, athletic directors, coaches and even former college/professional athletes. Probably the biggest realization of these leaders is that what we HAVE BEEN DOING and ARE CURRENTLY DOING to form our athletes-Mind, Body and Spirit- is just NOT ENOUGH in this changing world we are living in; the game has indeed CHANGED! SportsLeader, recently, has had the pleasure of meeting two of these types of leaders in the Cleveland area; leaders that are committed to doing more.

Tom Cousineau (#36), with legendary Woody Hayes and the 3 other 1978 Buckeye football captains.

We met Tom Cousineau, last winter, through legendary Moeller football coach Gerry Faust who both reside in Akron, Ohio. Cousineau is a legend in Ohio athletics(although you would never guess it today with how modest and humble he is!), playing high school football for heralded Cleveland St. Edward's, winning All-American honors at linebacker at Ohio State and playing four years professionally in Cleveland for the Browns. (in addition to playing in Canada and San Francisco) Currently, he is coaching football at Cleveland St. Ed's.

Cousineau and myself: Buckeyes and Spartans CAN get along!

Cousineau LOVES the idea of coaches impacting their players more. The lessons he learned from his own dad, football coach at Lakewood H.S. in Cleveland, Woody Hayes at Ohio State and Sam Rutigliano playing with the Browns have impacted him his whole live; they were his BIGGEST AND BEST TEACHERS! Cousineau has been nothing short of amazing in the spreading the word to anybody that will hear: OUR PLAYERS NEED MORE HELP. He has pitched this message to anybody that will listen. So it was no surprise when he orchestrated some meetings in Cleveland with some current educators in the greater Cleveland area and SportsLeader.

One of the educators that we met in those meetings was Sal Miroglotta, President of Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, Ohio. Sal is in his 6th year as president of Lake Catholic and his 33rd year in Catholic education, serving previously, as principal at St. Peter Chanel and Benedictine high schools in Cleveland. Lake Catholic has a tremendous reputation and tradition in providing incredible education for their students in Mentor. One of it's finest distinctions is that when a student goes to Lake Catholic, one is truly getting a Catholic service-oriented education. In fact, last year, Lake Catholic seniors served over 24,000 hours of service for the local Mentor and Cleveland communities!

Check out Lake Catholic!

Lake Catholic has a fine tradition in athletics, as well. They have crowned several individual state wrestling champions, 3 football state championships and most recently, the girls volleyball OHSAA state championship in 2010. Currently, they offer 24 varsity sports for young people to compete and grow in their Catholic faith-Mind, Body and Spirit. Sal and the Lake Catholic administrators(including principal-Robert Kumazec and AD-Sam Colacarro) knew they wanted more for their sports programs- an EVEN MORE impactful sports ministry program than they already had. So after discussion over the summer, Lake Catholic decided to bring SportsLeader aboard for all coaches and athletes for the winter and spring seasons.

Lake Catholic High School now joins a longer and longer list of schools that want to DO MORE for their sports programs AND are bringing in SportsLeader to work with their athletic departments to more completely mentor and develop their coaches and athletes. Human formation is indeed hard work for all of us, but for it to happen, one has to start, no matter how uncomfortable that may be. Praise God for putting into men like Tom Cousineau and Sal Miroglotta that belief that things CAN get better for the ones we love. Because of men like these- educating our young people in Cleveland, Cleveland does in fact, ROCK!

Check out what SportsLeader can do for YOUR school!
