Do You Want This For Your Son Or Daughter?

Ever wonder what it would be like to work at a fast food restaurant?

Ever want your child or one of your players to get a job?

I recently had a very interesting conversation with the son of a very good friend of mine.

His son is 17 and he works at a major fast food franchise.

This is his first steady job and he has been there for about 9 months. He works around 25-30 hours a week while going to school.

Since we write about virtue and the urgent need our world has of it, this provides yet another vantage point to appreciate the impact the absence of virtue has on everyday life.

As you read these comments please imagine this was your son or daughter talking:

The general atmosphere is OK, not too bad and I’m very thankful that I have a job in the first place. It has taught me a lot.

But there are a ton of challenging aspects of it too.

For example most of the 15 total employees including the manager are totally lacking in 3 virtues:

Responsibility - many people do their job as bad as possible without getting fired. They beg to be put in the area that they want ...

Respect - most could not care less about anyone else they are working with

Perseverance - people will give up, walk out during their shift

Of the 15 employees, the manager is 40, I’m the youngest and everyone else is in between 19 and 27.

There are some days it is so bad that I just drive home and go straight to bed because I’m so sick of being around other people.

There is one guy who smokes pot on his breaks back behind the dumpster. The manager knows …

One day it was extremely busy, I’m working the drive-through and this guy is prepping food in the back.

He had just had a break, comes in high, and has no clue where he is or what he is doing. He totally screws up an order, shuts down a machine … Total chaos.

Everything gets backed up. I have to leave drive-through, cook food, prep food … I’m begging for help and the manager is chit chatting … then I get blamed for not moving the drive through customers fast enough …

Since this conversation the manager was fired for stealing money.

Is this what you want for your child? What can we do better?
