Iron Man Helps the Homeless Smile

Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, MI has integrated the SportsLeader Virtue Program into their PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) system.

What is School-Wide PBIS?
It is a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.

I was able to meet with some of the students who make up the Virtue Committee. What an amazing and truly inspiring group of young people. I left them with such tremendous hope.

Each month a group of students work on the virtue of the month presentation. This presentation is shown to all 1,400 students in the school. This is extremely impactful because the students know it was created by their peers, so their engagement is immediate.

During one of their monthly presentations they showed a video about Iron Man ... well sort of.

Ben Reynolds, Asst. Principal, was a coach who now brings virtue into the PBIS at Roosevelt HS.

Hey Lou,

Below I have put the link for our December Virtue Lesson. The Virtue of the Month is Compassion. The lesson went great. I was able to make it into about 2/3 of our classrooms and saw tons of great discussion. Also, we did a fundraising campaign to help 10 RHS families get a Christmas dinner. We collected $818 from our students in one day. Our Key Club is helping out by running a canned food drive. The idea is that each family will get a box of food and we will use the money to compliment the food with a ham or turnkey. Any left over money we may give the families a gift card to a local grocery store.

Just wanted to share how well things are going. I am so proud of how far the program has gone and look forward to continued growth. Our PBIS staff committee will be starting a lunch group in January. This group will target struggling students. The idea is that once a month we will host a pizza lunch and a teacher will talk with students about some life lessons (many tied to that month’s virtue). Our virtue for January is reflection.

Go Bears!

-Ben

L ro R: Michaelyn Zalewski and Tara Boller help direct the 40 students who make up the Virtue Committee.

These same students are now planning a conference to introduce students in Michigan area high schools how to run a Virtue Program in their schools as well.

Our world needs more VIRTUE.
