Called To Be A COACH?

VOCATION:

1.a particular occupation, business, or profession; calling.
2.a strong impulse or inclination to follow a particular activity or career.
3.a divine call to God's service

Summer time is an ideal time for educators to take time to stop and reflect. What went well this past year? How could I improve? Sometimes, even more important questions arise in the process: Is this really what I am supposed to do? Is teaching/coaching really what I'm supposed to do with my life? Maybe I should be doing something else?

Is this really my vocation....am I really called to coach?

Coach Ron Hughes-5 ft. 9 inch QB at Hillsdale College? Yep....and a good one too!

One coach that I knew and loved was my high school head varsity football coach, Ron Hughes...and HE was called to coach. How do I know? I so WANTED to play for him! I loved his attention, his ribbing, his spirit. He made football larger than life! He also went out of his way to help me succeed. It was never about him, it was always about us. I KNOW in my heart that he answered God's call to work with teenagers and create something special for us. With that being the case, every day I thank God that he was my coach.

Steve Sheehan

Coach Sheehan has given hope to his football players wherever he's coached!

Without a doubt, the finest coach I've ever coached with is Steve Sheehan. Coach Sheehan was called to coach! How do I know? I so WANTED to coach for him! I loved his humility, his compassion, his spirit. He made coaching football larger than life!. He also possessed the unique ability to genuinely be interested in you, literally making you feel good every time he talked to you; asking questions, asking your opinion, involving you.....affirming and empowering you. I KNOW in my heart that he answered God's call to work with teenagers and create something special for them. I thank God every day that I got to coach for him.

Coach-Player....SPARTANS FOREVER!

One of the finest players I've coached was Greg Jones. Coaching Greg made me realize that I was called to coach. How do I know? I so WANTED to coach him! I loved his passion to play, his confidence, his spirit. He made coaching larger than life! I spent hours upon hours trying to come up with better ways to coach him( and the other LB'ers!) so he could succeed more. And he repaid me by serving his teammates, the same exact way I was trying to serve him. I coached him off the field as well, to the point of being a pain. (Can you believe it?) I so wanted to help him become GREAT! It felt so good, so right that I KNEW in my heart that I was answering God's call to work with teenagers and make life more special for them. I thank God every day that I got the chance to coach Greg....and the thousands of others like him.

We at SportsLeader know it isn't easy to coach these days. The job gets harder and harder, with more responsibilities and less resources every year. But when one is called to coach, it doesn't matter how tough the job is. It is a calling from God. It fulfills a hunger deep in our soul, for we are only whole when we are doing that very thing that God created us to do.

Coaches, take some time this summer to rediscover your passion to the vocation of coaching. Rediscover the truth that you have been called to this noble profession. Your sport needs you. Your school needs you. Your players need you. GOD needs you to be true to yourself and your calling. We need you to be the example to your players on what real men and women do, no matter the challenge.

SportsLeader believes in you and that is our vocation.....to support you!
