I've Got Leadership STYLE!

Obviously, there are many different types of leaders. Some are good, some are not so good. And just like the many different types of leaders, there are just as many different types of leadership STYLES. But let us not fool ourselves because just as some leaders are more efficient than others, some leadership styles we use are MORE EFFICIENT than others as well. Maybe it would be wise for all of us wanting to be great leaders to start looking at our leadership styles more closely; if not for us, for the people we hope to lead.

Indeed, we need leaders to comfort and support in times of distress, but why wait for a loss to LEAD?

Two types of leadership styles are Regulator Leaders and leaders that are Comforters. These styles can be effective. Creating rules and regulations for your players and consoling and sympathizing your team is a must, especially in today's world. However, data show that these type of leaders are NOT doing ENOUGH to effectively lead their people.

Are you a Leader ONLY because of your position of being in charge?

Two other leadership styles are Taskmaster Leaders and leaders that are Manipulators. These leaders usually can get things done. Where as the taskmasters are more blunt and demanding, manipulators can skillfully influence with incentives that don't even seem like you are being led. Again, data show, however, that these types of leaders are still NOT doing ENOUGH to effectively lead their people.

Face it, all effective leaders HAVE TO develop their people….what a PRIVILEGE!

Probably the most efficient style is for leaders to be Developer Leaders. These type of leaders KNOW the most important task is DEVELOPING their people. They believe in their people. They get their people involved, to foster growth in them. They want to communicate honestly and openly with them for everybody's sake, ESPECIALLY for the sake of the overall team. They pour themselves out for the team, knowing that as soon as one skill is mastered, there will be yet another skill to develop. Their leadership is NEVER about them but instead so their people can thrive and become the best they can be!

One of the most famous Developer leaders is legendary basketball coach Phil Jackson. He has always believed in developing each player for the greater good of the team. Think about the volatile and incredibly talented players he has coached: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Kobe Bryant and many more. The Bulls would never have dominated the sport of basketball under Jackson's leadership if he hadn't made it a point to develop not only his team, but his players as individuals on the team.

Make no mistake about it, great leadership is an art. And that means it needs to be worked on and worked on and worked on EVERY DAY! We at SportsLeader urge each and every one of you to become that leader that loves, and inspires, believes in…….DEVELOPS his/her people. Our players want and need our leadership!
