The last of human freedoms - the ability to chose one's attitude in a given set of circumstances.

Viktor E. Frankl

Across this great country coaches have been preparing their teams tirelessly for championship seasons. They have put in hundreds and hundreds of hours planning, practicing and preparing their teams for this 2014-15 sports season.

"This year is going to be the year!"

But, what happens when by mid-season with a losing record and no championship in sight, everybody realizes, short of a miracle, there is NO way they'll win that championship they've worked so hard for? For many.......DESPAIR!

"Why do I keep doing this year after year? I will never win!"

Our culture has defined success as winning, PERIOD. But what happens when your best three players get injured, freakishly? Or when a referee "blows" a call and you lose on that controversial call? Or when you don't have the money, facilities or community support that is really needed to have a legitimate chance to win it all? Or when several of your players act like teenagers and get suspended for the big game? What happens when the odds of life are so stacked against you, you lose. Are you a failure?

Coaches, sometimes we have to be reminded, especially in the midst of a difficult season, that the vocation of coaching is far, far MORE than winning championships. Don't allow yourself to be fooled. Don't let the thirst for YOUR recognition and affirmation cloud your senses, for WE ALL know that ultimate success is so much, much more.

Finding joy in desperate times...is SUCCESS.

Overcoming a mountain of adversity...is SUCCESS.

Persevering through trials and tribulations...is SUCCESS.

Being a part of something...is SUCCESS.

Facing one's fears...is SUCCESS.

Sacrificing yourself to an incredible cause...is SUCCESS.

Just having the opportunity to play a game you love...is SUCCESS.

We, as coaches, have an incredible platform to teach our players the REAL definitions of success. Don't shut down, blame and quit just because you haven't won every game you play, writing off the season as a failure. You have the freedom to choose your attitude, every day, in success or in perceived failure.

SUCCESS is all around YOU!

Choose TODAY to celebrate today's successes regardless of what it may say on on the scoreboard, reminding yourself and your players that ultimate success can take many forms.

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
