Every month the SportsLeader team prays a novena to draw ourselves and everyone we work with closer to God.

The Canadian Martyrs, also known as the North American Martyrs, were eight Jesuit missionaries from Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. They were ritually tortured and killed on various dates in the mid-17th century in Canada, in what is now southern Ontario, and in upstate New York, during the warfare between the Iroquois (particularly the Mohawk people) and the Huron. They are considered martyrs of Catholicism.

The martyrs are St. René Goupil (1642), St. Isaac Jogues (1646), St. Jean de Lalande (1646), St. Antoine Daniel (1648), St. Jean de Brébeuf (1649), St. Noël Chabanel (1649), St. Charles Garnier (1649), and St. Gabriel Lalemant (1649).

These Saints are excellent examples of our virtue of the week: PASSION.

This month we will be praying, asking for the intercession of The North American Martyrs: Saints Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf, and Companions.

We will be praying today October 19th, the feast of The North American Martyrs, through and including October 27th.

Jesus, my Lord and Savior, what can I give you in return for all the favors you have first conferred on me?

My beloved Jesus, here and now I offer my body and blood and life.

May I die only for you, if you will grant me this grace, since you willingly died for me.

Let me so live that you may grant me the gift of such a happy death.

In this way, my God and Savior, I will take from your hand the cup of your sufferings and call on your name: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!"

Father, you consecrated the first beginnings of the faith in North America by the preaching and martyrdom of Saints John and Isaac and their companions.

By the help of their prayers may the Christian faith continue to grow throughout the world.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
